Pam Fardoe originally said no when a friend asked her if she wanted a dog whose owner no longer had time for him. Thankfully, when her friend brought around a sweet Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Pam “took one look at him and said, ‘Oh, go on then!” She kept the dog and named him Dukey.
A little over two years later, Pam is extra grateful for that decision to take in Dukey. Not only have they grown close with Pam telling the Liverpool Echo that “he’s become my everything,” but Dukey has also saved her life.
On November 18, Pam got up around 6:40 to let Dukey out for his usual morning routine. Afterward, the two returned to bed and Pam fell back asleep. According to Pam, “Next thing I knew he was pushing me, shaking and scratching me with his paws to get my attention.”
This wasn’t normal behavior for the three-year-old dog, so Pam tried to figure out what was happening. She told the Liverpool Echo that Dukey “looked at me and looked outside, and I asked him what the matter was again.” Pam was worried, but still not sure what the danger was. She followed Dukey’s gaze, looked out the window, and saw flames.
Pam got Dukey’s leash and tried to get him downstairs, out of their apartment building. Unfortunately, at that moment, Dukey’s fear acted up and Pam lost a hold of his leash. Thankfully firefighters were then on the scene and able to help both Pam and Dukey to safety outside.
The firefighter in charge told the Liverpool Echo that it “was quite possibly the worst fire I’ve seen in a long, long time….It was horrendous, they were so lucky to get out.”
Pam knows how lucky she is and credits her hero dog for saving her life. “I don’t think I would have woken up if it wasn’t for him,” she said.
Everyone who helped with the fire also gave Dukey his due credit. That day Pam said, “Everybody has been fussing over him today and I think he knows what he has done.”
Dukey was a little sick from the smoke, but Pam reported that he’s since “been absolutely fine.”
Two years ago Pam never could have guessed the outcome of her kind welcome. Now she does. In her words, Dukey is “a fantastic dog and a hero.”
