The Daily Mail reports that Sue and Michael Pethick were camping with their rescued red heeler, Abby, in a remote area of South Australia. The couple had adopted Abby from a shelter in Victoria about a year ago and were looking forward to enjoying a fun camping trip. Unfortunately, it almost ended in disaster. One day during the trip, Sue and Abby left Michael at the campground and went for what was meant to be a short walk. While walking with Abby, Sue tripped and fell three meters (almost 10 feet) down a cliff face. The fall broke her ankle. Sue wasn’t able to get up and return to the campsite.
Although Abby seemed to want to stay with Sue, Sue urged Abby “to go find Dad.” Abby obeyed and hurried back to the campsite to find Michael. Michael was already worried because of how long the pair had been gone. He became even more concerned when Abby showed up without Sue.
Michael told reporters that he told Abby “take me to Mum.” Abby obeyed. According to Michael, “she turned around and headed down this little track, along the cliff face and walkways.” Abby “stopped near an edge where it goes down to the beach and waited for me to catch up,” he continued. When he got there, Michael saw his wife on her back, three meters down the cliff. It took two hours for emergency crews to stabilize Sue, but they were able to successfully remove her from the cliff. She was airlifted to a hospital and received surgery for a broken ankle.
Abby got not only treats and pats for her heroic actions, but the couple’s enduring and public gratitude. Sue shared her thanks on Facebook. “Loving our little girl even more,” she wrote. “Thank you, thank you, thank you puppy girl.”
Michael expressed how grateful he was to the Adelaide Advertiser, “We’re very fortunate that [Abby] needed to be rescued… and now she’s rescued us.”
