The Dog-Friendly Summer Bucket List
5 easy, enriching ideas - no big plans required.
Give your dog a summer to remember
Your dog doesn’t know it’s summer. They just know the days are warmer, the walks are sunnier, and you’ve started smelling like sunscreen for some reason. Luckily, making the season feel special for them is pretty simple — a frozen treat after a walk, a shady picnic, or a little backyard nose work can turn an ordinary afternoon into the highlight of their week.
Here are five ideas from our summer bucket list — easy activities that make everyday summer moments feel a little more special for you and your dog.
1. A brain game for when it's too hot to walk
When it’s too hot for a long walk, give your dog’s brain a workout instead. Enrichment games encourage natural behaviors like sniffing, chewing, and problem-solving— and they can be a great confidence booster for dogs who love having a job to do.
Keep it simple and let your dog do the hard work. Roll a handful of Halo kibble into a towel, loosely tie it, and watch them sniff, paw, and problem-solve their way through it. Hide a few Halo Freeze-Dried Raw Treats in a muffin tin, cover each cup with a tennis ball, or scatter pieces across a snuffle mat to turn snack time into a fun enrichment session.
Pair it with: Halo Freeze-Dried Raw Chicken Hearts or Halo Holistic Freeze-Dried Chicken.
2. Homemade pupsicles, a summer classic
Pupsicles are a summer classic for a reason — easy to make, drool-worthy by design, and perfect for cooling down after outdoor play.
Start with a dog-safe base like plain unsweetened Greek yogurt, mashed banana, or 100% canned pumpkin purée. Stir in blueberries or small pieces of watermelon, then pour the mixture into silicone molds or an ice cube tray and freeze.
For a savory version, blend Halo wet food with a splash of water before freezing. It’s a simple way to turn your dog’s favorite meal into a cool, summer-ready treat.
Pair it with: Halo wet food (BBQ Stew is a summer-appropriate favorite).
3. A picnic, but make it pup-friendly
A dog-friendly picnic might be the lowest-effort idea on this list. Find a shady spot, bring a blanket, pack water for both of you, and you've made an afternoon of it.
Bring a travel bowl, fresh water, and a small portion of their regular food. Tip: A meal topper turns a plain park bowl into an occasion — and if you want to lean all the way into the cookout theme, a can of Halo Elevate BBQ Stew is about as picnic-coded as dog food gets.
Pair it with: Halo kibble topped with Halo Elevate BBQ Stew.
4. A backyard sniffari
A sniffari, also known as a decompression walk, is exactly what it sounds like: a slow, dog-led outing where your pup gets to follow their nose. Think of it like a backyard treasure hunt, but instead of using their eyes, your dog gets to sniff their way to the prize. And instead of finding a treasure chest, they’re finding hidden Halo treats — which, to them, is pretty much the same thing.
Scatter a few pieces of Halo kibble through the grass, tuck some Halo Holistic Vegan Biscuits under safe outdoor toys, and let them forage at their own speed. All that sniffing gives their brain a serious workout, so even a short sniffari in the shade can feel as enriching as a much longer walk.
Pair it with: Halo kibble or Halo Vegan Plant-Based Biscuits.
5. Catch a sunset together
End the day on a slower note with a sunset walk, or drive your dog to your favorite spot to watch the sky change colors. Bring a blanket, settle in, and enjoy the view together. It doesn’t have to be a big adventure — even a quick drive to a favorite lookout or an extra lap around the neighborhood can feel special when the sky is showing off.
Bring water, keep your dog leashed, and pack a few treats so they have something to snack on while you soak it all in. Bonus points if you snap a golden hour photo together.
Pair it with: Halo treats for a little sunset snack.
Make this summer one to remember
You don’t need a packed calendar to give your dog a summer they’ll love. To our pets, quality time with us is already the main event. A backyard sniffari, a frozen treat, or a picnic might seem simple to us, but to them, it can feel like the best day ever — because you’re right there with them.
The most important part is being present and letting your pup feel just how excited you are to spend time together. If you try any of these summer activities with your dog, tag @halopets on Instagram or Facebook so we can see your adventures!
